What does “one guest at a time” look like at one of the world’s most celebrated restaurants?

For a curated group of leaders and builders gathered for our latest salon, it meant stepping behind The French Laundry’s iconic blue door into an evening shaped by intentionality and care.

The salon opened with a rare invitation to access the French Laundry’s kitchen, where chef Thomas Keller and his culinary team welcomed attendees for cocktails and intimate conversation. As Keller guided a behind-the-scenes tour of his three-star Michelin restaurant, he reflected on the principals of his “one guest at a time” philosophy—how an unforgettable meal is shaped not only by food, but by the countless details that make the experience come alive.

His ethos was endlessly present throughout the evening. Keller and his team spent the morning hand-picking ingredients that would be part of the evening’s 10-course tasting menu, created specifically for this salon. During the first course, guests discovered that he had handwritten a short description of why each ingredient was selected on every menu.

Keller spoke candidly about the conviction and discipline that shaped his career. “You think about the significance of one decision and how it changes your life,” he said. “I decided to become a chef in 1977, and I went after it with all my heart, ambitions, commitment, and determination.”

After dinner, the evening pivoted to a unique opportunity to explore The French Laundry’s renowned wine cellar. As the salon wrapped up, Keller waited by the restaurant’s blue door to personally connect with each attendee one final time, reinforcing his belief that premier hospitality is best served “one guest at a time.”

We bring together the Bay Area’s ambitious leaders and builders for intimate gatherings centered around ideas that are shaping the future. To learn more about future events exclusive to our network in San Francisco, please reach out to your Goldman Sachs representative.
